Committee Comment – August 2019

Let’s start by mentioning the fantastic race meeting held over the weekend of 13 & 14 July. A very full race card on both days and big entry lists in many categories made for a great weekend of racing, with some very tired Officials and racers alike. We saw some excellent racing and no shortage of action as well as a bit of controversy. There are a couple of pieces elsewhere in this newsletter covering some of the racing action. Thank you to the Officials, volunteers and WASCC team who make our events happen, as well as all the competitors, pit crew and spectators.

As well as the July race meeting, the Wanneroo facility has been busy with lots of other events and activities. Some of these include Point2Point, Roll Racing, Ricciardo’s Racers, an MCRC race meeting, Driftwest and D1WA events, Fastlane Race School, as well as various car clubs including the Jaguar Car Club, WRX and MX5 Clubs. From the corporate side WA Police and FMG conducted driver training activities. Our WASCC staff do a great job in the coordination of all of these bookings. Thanks team.

A few categories have been racing interstate in July and we know there are some great stories about these adventures. I hope we can read about them soon in this newsletter. Contributions to the newsletter are always welcome.

Our team has had some very positive feedback about the current condition of the outer field area and how great it is looking, and the Committee have to agree. In May this year the Committee accepted a business case presented by the General Manager which proposed to outsource lawn care for the facility. This contract includes mowing, trimming, weed management and fertilising programs. The specialist equipment they bring has made a visible difference. In addition, during the past few months a lot of work has gone into the presentation of the gardens and buildings. If we add the good fortune of some great rainfall over the past couple of months, the whole place is looking better than it has in many years. Even better, the improvements aren’t going to stop! Keep an eye out for all the improvements.

Something exciting is happening in the near future. The WASCC Committee will soon be commencing a planning and strategy process for the Club, which will provide a plan and direction for WASCC, the Wanneroo facility, our events and activities. We’ll be asking members and other stakeholders for their input and engagement, so make sure you watch this space for information. This is arguably one of the most important non-racing activities to be undertaken in recent years, and it will be a great opportunity to be part of the Club’s future. Stay tuned.

WASCC is very keen to host the Supercars again in 2020 and our GM has been busy in discussions with Supercars management regarding the prospect of a 2020 Perth SuperSprint. At this stage the calendar hasn’t been announced, however we’re keeping everything crossed and remain quietly confident of a positive outcome.

August is another busy month for racing, events and activities at Wanneroo Raceway. Fast laps and safe driving.
